Why an RCD trips
The most common cause in villas is damp in outdoor circuits: garden lights, buried junction boxes, pool and irrigation pumps. Appliances with heating elements, such as the water heater, oven or washing machine, and ageing insulation also fail.
Sometimes there isn't a single fault: several small leaks add up and exceed the RCD's 30 mA when it rains or certain equipment switches on.
How I find it
- I measure leakage circuit by circuit with a leakage clamp, without cutting power to the whole house.
- I test the insulation of suspect lines at up to 1000 V.
- I test the RCD itself: trip time and current, type B included.
- I scan the consumer unit with a thermal camera to find connections that overheat.
What you get
A short report: which circuit fails, why, the measurements and photos, and the repair options at a fixed price.
Call-out price before I set off. Fixed quote before any repair.
I work with measurements: power analyser, insulation tester up to 1000 V, leakage clamp and thermal camera. What I find, you get in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Will replacing the RCD fix it?
Rarely. An RCD trips because it detects real leakage. Replacing it without measuring only postpones the problem.
Does it need to be tripping when you arrive?
No. With the house running normally I measure each circuit's leakage and insulation; defects show up in the readings even if nothing trips at that moment.
How long does the visit take?
Usually two to three hours for a villa.
